The vacant lot 470, plan 20, owned by widow Frannie Abraham, was purchased by William John McGuiness in the summer of 1914. The original address was 113 Caledonia Street. William was living at 60 Hibernia Street when he purchased the lot.
William J. McGuiness was born on August 7, 1858 in AlbionTownship, Peel County, Ontario to John William McGuiness and Catherine Burrows. John was born in 1831 in Ireland and died onOctober 23, 1887 in Kinkora, Ontario. Catherine was born onMay 15, 1829 in Ireland and died on March 1, 1909 in Kinkora. John and Catherine married on December 31, 1855 in Peel County.
William was the oldest of six children, followed by Mary, 1860-April 14, 1912; John Patrick, December 31,1862-March 5, 1956; Margaret, June 23, 1865 in Brampton-January 22, 1943 in North Bay; Sarah, October 13, 1867 in BramptonMarch 29, 1936 in Kinkora; and Michael, July 20,1869 in Peel-June 18,1939 in London, Ontario.
William John married Mary Ann Stock on February 9, 1886 in Kinkora, Ontario, where Mary Ann was born on May 6, 1863 to Joseph Stock and Mary Hishon. In the 1881 Census, William is listed as a farmer living on a farm by himself.
After they married, Mary Ann moved onto the farm with William, as listed in the 1891 Census. Their first child, Mary Catherine "Kate", was born on June 14, 1891, followed by Mary Florence, born on August 8, 1894, and Ellen Margaret, born on December 6, 1898.
Ill health forced William to retire from farming and move into Stratford. In the Vernon city directory of 1916 he is listed as living at 113 Caledonia Street. In the 1921 Census the address had changed to 115 Caledonia Street. William, Mary Ann, and daughter Mary Florence (tailoress) were living here.
Mary Florence married Michael Toohey of Lucan at St. Joseph's Church in Stratford on April 10, 1923.
Ellen Margaret married Robert J. Quinlan on June 19, 1922 at St. Joseph's Church. She died on January 2, 1994 in Peterborough, Ontario.
Mary Catherine "Kate" is listed in the 1901 Census, living on the farm with her parents. She isn't listed in her father's obituary in 1929 as surviving him.
William John died on November 4, 1929 while still living at 115 Caledonia Street. In his obituary it says he was one of the most respected and well-liked men living in the city. His wife, Mary Ann, died September 14, 1944, and both are buried in St Patrick's Cemetery in Kinkora.
