John Patrick Malloy House
175 Church Street Built 1913
On March 9, 1869, in Ellice Township, Perth County, John Patrick Malloy was born (the fourth of seven children) to Florence Malloy (1836-1876), a farmer who had immigrated from the U.S. in 1859, and whose parents were from Ireland and had settled in Ellice, and Louise (Louisa) Hearsnip (Hearsnep) (1841-1924), who was born in Ellice Township, where her family farmed since 1853 or earlier, and where her father, William, had been the first postmaster in Kinkora in 1855. Louise's father was from Lancashire, England and her  mother from Buffalo, New York.
On October 25, 1898 John married Margaret Jane Brown (1866-1909), daughter of fellow Ellice Township residents,
Edward (Ned) Brown, from Limerick, Ireland, and Bridget Collins, born in Logan Township, Perth County. Interestingly, Edward bought two acres in Kinkora from William Hearsnip, John Malloy's maternal grandfather, for his blacksmith shop and house. Edward was also a cattle drover and pastured his cattle on other land in the area. Edward and his family moved to one of these properties in 1898. Edward was also treasurer of Ellice from 1873 to 1879.
John and Margaret lived at the Malloy family farm until Margaret's death in 1909. The farm was first in his mother's name, and later in John's name. In addition to farming, John supplied much of the township's gravel in the 1890s. John and Margaret had two children: Mary (1899-1990) and Madeline (1905-1991).
After Margaret's death, John moved to Stratford. His mother moved with him in order to help raise his two daughters. In the 1910 city directory he is listed as a contractor living at 181 Church Street. In the directories of 1911-1917, John is listed as general city foreman, street foreman, or city street superintendent, living at 181 Church Street until 1913. By September 1912 John had purchased Lot 318 on Church Street, and by the summer of 1913 he had built the current house on the north part of that lot. It would appear that an addition was built by the following summer. In the 1916 and 1917 directories, John is listed as living at 302 Huron Street, although the street directory in 1916 lists him at 175 Church Street. It is unclear why he is listed as living in both places. What is clear, however, is that he lived at 175 Church Street until his death on September 16, 1937.
Beginning in the 1919 city directory, John is listed as manager, Duggan & Gray Co. Ltd., a coal merchant located at 57 Mackenzie Street. He remained in that position until his death.
On November 9, 1920 John married Bridget Durkin, daughter of Michael Durkin and Catharine McGrath, Irish immigrant farmers in Ellice Township. By 1901 Bridget had moved with her parents and siblings to Stratford, where she became a bookkeeper. Bridget lived at 175 Church Street until her death on May 11, 1951.
Both John and Bridget are buried in Avondale Cemetery. Margaret is buried in Kinkora, along with John's parents. At the time of Bridget's death in 1951, there were four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Daughters Mary and Madeline were still living in Stratford at that time.
